With the temperatures below freezing, and often below zero in Rexburg, snow and ice are inevitable and knowing how to drive in the snow then becomes very imporant. Driving on icy roads, especially in a college town, can quickly turn into mayhem. At Rexburg Car Shop, we’re here to help you stay safe and keep your car in top shape, no matter how harsh the winter gets.
Here’s what you need to know about driving in the snow and ice.
First slow down!
Icy roads have less traction, so the number one rule is to slow down. Speeding, accelerating, or sometimes even driving the speed limit can lead to skidding or losing control. Drive slower than you normally would when there’s ice on the roads and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

Give Yourself Space
Leave about three times more space than you usually would between you and the vehicle in front of you. It often takes longer for your car to stop on ice, so this extra distance gives you enough time to stop safely in case of a sudden stop or an icy patch. It’s a good idea to start slowing down early when you are coming up on a traffic light or stop sign, too.
Gently Brake
Brake gently when you’re driving in snow or ice. Sudden braking can lock your wheels and make you skid. If your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS), let the system do its job and don’t pump the brakes.

Use Winter Tires
Regular tires have a hard time in icy conditions. Winter tires in Rexburg are a good idea because they provide better traction and handling. If you haven’t made the switch yet, swing by our shop for help.
Avoid Cruise Control
Cruise control is great on long drives, but not on icy roads. If your car hits a patch of ice while in cruise control, it might accelerate unexpectedly. Always keep full control of your speed in winter conditions.
How to Handle Skids
If your car starts to skid, there’s no need to panic. Don’t slam on the brakes. Instead, simply take your foot off the gas and gently steer in the direction you want to go. Oversteering and hard braking can make things worse, so just keep your movements smooth and stay calm until your car regains traction
Stay Safe this Winter
In the winter, it’s especially good to plan ahead if you need to drive a lot. Check the weather forecast before heading out and consider changing your plans if conditions are particularly bad. Always be prepared, and if you don’t feel safe driving, don’t risk it. Drive safe out there, Rexburg! Your safety is always worth the extra effort.
